Edward's Story

Edward "Ed" Coffin, 80, of Fort Worth, Texas, passed away Dec. 1, 2017, in Fort Worth. He was born June 23, 1937, in Clinton, Ind., to Eugene A. Coffin and Ruth M. Davies Coffin. He grew up in Bloomingdale, with former residence in Terre Haute.
Mr. Coffin attended Elementary school at Bloomingdale School and Fairbanks Elementary, Jr. High at Sarah Scott Junior High, High School at Terre Haute Wiley, graduating class of 1954 and college at University of Colorado, Indiana State University, and USAF Technology Institute.
Mr. Coffin was founder and owner of Technology Export Management in Dallas-Fort Worth, retired from American Airlines in 1996 after 20 years of service with previous 20 years in information technology and services with Massey-Ferguson, Rath Packing, CBS and Mutual of Omaha.
Mr. Coffin was a U.S. Air Force veteran, served in the Ground Engineering Installation Agency.
Mr. Coffin's accomplishments included TXM high tech startups, major airlines and network technology firms a conduit for obtaining export clearance or licensing for foreign trade of U.S. advanced technologies; strategic planner responsible for emerging technology assessment and planning or AA's InterAAct; responsible for systems role in Rath's corporate overhaul to regain profitability; served on the NMA Board of Directors for four years, served on the SBEA Board of Directors for seven years; testified to Congress on Exports immediately after 9/11; served as acting Radar Installation Team chief at GEEIA; recognized via Certificates, Commerce Department.
Mr. Coffin was preceded in death by his father in 2001 and mother in 1992; his former spouse, DeAnn Kay (St. Clair) Coffin Peterson, to whom he was married from 1961-2003 and deceased in September 2014; brother, David (Linda) Coffin (d October 2012); his grandparents, John M. Coffin (d 1942) Elizabeth (Seymour) Coffin (d 1926), Cecil Davies (d 1960) and Bertha (Bennett) Davies (d 1971).
He is survived by his children, Christopher K. Coffin of Mandeville, La., and Cynthia K. (Coffin) Spradlin (Matt Spradlin) of Fort Worth; partner, Sue Downer Hindman since 2014; grandchildren, Ashlan Coffin, Alexandra Coffin and Audrey Coffin, all of Louisiana and Cole Spradlin and Caden Spradlin, both of Texas; great-grandchild, Connor Coffin of Louisiana; and niece and nephew, Robert (Michele) Coffin and Joelle Flaherty.
Ed enjoyed several years of amateur basketball, many years of golf, officiating high school and collegiate sports, returning to Wiley reunions, and most of all attending his family's participation in athletics, the arts, and events. In retirement he relished following the Texas Rangers and administering on of their online fan forums. He lived the mantra, "Do what you love, anything else will kill you." His work allowed him travel, including Japan and Venezuala as well as many sessions in Washington, DC. Favorite leisure travel was primarily to Hawaii and multiple destinations in the Caribbean. His legacy is not his own, but rather the many accomplishments of his children and grandchildren.
