Estel David Matthews passed from this life on December 3rd, 2017, to rejoin his recently departed wife, Sue, on their next great travel adventure. Born February 10, 1926, to Owen Way and Orinoco Belle (Stowers) Matthews, Estel spent his childhood helping on the family farm, rollerskating with many of the girls in Ashtabula County, and developing his love of cars and their mechanics.
A member of the Geneva High School class of 1943, Estel would later spend many hours organizing class reunions. Following his graduation, Estel entered the United States Navy, and was proud to have served in World War II under Woody Hayes on board the destroyer escort USS Rinehart. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Estel married the love of his life, Susanne Nesbitt Troy in Kingsland, Georgia, on November 14, 1946.
Estel worked for Rockwell International as a Production Scheduler in the Brake Division until retiring in 1980. He was also exceptionally active with the Masons in the local Lodge, Chapter, Council, and Commandery having served as Past Worshipful Master, High Priest, and Illustrious Master.
An avid prankster, Estel was known for the fantastic telling of tales both of the tall and true varieties. Estel enjoyed puttering around in his boat, fishing his way across the United States from the Atlantic to the Pacific and up into Canada at Rice Lake. When he wasn't camping and traveling, Estel loved piecing together family genealogy, cooking and baking pies, working in his yard, enjoying his rose bushes and pond, and being a fixer of all things (especially his tractors and cars) with his "do everything machine."
Above all Estel loved his family. He was the proud father of Kim Turner, Pam Whelan, Vicky Waller, and David Matthews (deceased) as well as adoring grandfather to Amanda Leonard, Jake Whelan, Lynsay Whelan, Robinlyn Vogel, Bradley Matthews, and Brian Matthews; great-grandfather to Gabe Matthews, Owen Matthews, Nicolas Matthews, Blake Matthews, and Paige Matthews; and loving brother of Jordan Matthews (deceased), Elnore "Pug" Chitester (deceased), Georgie King, and Nokie Tennant.
A celebration of Estel's life will be held at Ducro Funeral Home, 4524 Elm Avenue, Ashtabula on Sunday, December 10, 2017 with calling hours at 5:00pm, with a memorial service at 6:30pm, and Masonic service at 7:00pm. www.ducro.com
