Marie (Sarto)'s Story
LAWRENCE - Marie R. (Sarto) Sapienza, 98, passed away peacefully on February 6, 2018, at home with family.
Born in Lawrence, she was the daughter of the late Luigi and Luisa (Petrosino) Sarto. Marie was educated in the Lawrence and Methuen school systems. As a young woman, she worked in her family's bakery on Jackson Street, and for a short while at Plymouth Mills. Marie retired from Western Electric after 30 years working in the company's Crystal Room, where she was responsible for testing communications components.
Marie was a lifetime member of Corpus Christi Parish at Holy Rosary Church, and a longtime member of St. Rita's Sodality. She volunteered generously at both her church and the Lawrence Senior Center. Marie also belonged to the Young at Heart Club and the Pioneers, a Western Electric travel organization. An extraordinary wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, Marie gave her time, her talent, her everything to what she loved most, which was her family, friends, and church.
She was predeceased by Mario Sapienza, her loving husband of 59 years; her brothers, Andrew, and his wife, Mary, Nicholas, and Anthony, and his wife, Pauline; sisters, Rose Sarto, and Liza Roeger, and her husband, Herbert; brother-in-law, Alfio Sapienza, and his wife, Marianne; and her sister-in-law, Marie.
Her survivors include her sister-in-law, and friend, Louise Sarto; brother-in-law, Sebastian (Ned) Sapienza; as well as her daughter, Louise Scala of Seabrook, N.H., widow of Angelo Scala; sons, Richard and Joseph, and his partner, Helen Hoffman, of Rye, N.H.; her grandchildren, Lisa Scala-Cameron, and her husband, Michael Cameron, of Georgetown, Mass., Christopher Scala, and his wife, Patricia (Crocker) of Salem, N.H., and Tara (Sapienza) Cooper, and her husband, Scott, of Washington, N.J. She also leaves six great-grandchildren, Alexander, and Sebastian Cameron, Nicolas, Samuel, and Sofia Scala, and Claire Cooper; along with many nieces and nephews.
ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours on Thursday, February 15, 2018, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Cataudella Funeral Home, 126 Pleasant Valley St., Methuen. Her funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, February 16, 2018, at Corpus Christi Parish at Holy Rosary Church, 35 Essex St., Lawrence.
