Norma's Story

Text size

Norma Jean "Dickie" (Elkins) George was born September 3, 1931 in Porter, Oklahoma to Marvin Preston Elkins and Lavonia Jewel (Grogan) Elkins. She grew up a tomboy and loved the outdoors all her life. Her family shared their home with two uncles and her grandfather who made sure she learned skills that she used her entire life. Growing up with strong family ties and support helped nurture her gentle and kind spirit so beloved by her family.
After graduating from Porter High School in 1948 at age 16, Dickie held her first job as a soda jerk at Owl Drug in Wagoner. She would ride her beloved horse, Shirley, in to Wagoner on Sunday. Dickie would stay at her Uncle Earl's house during the week and work while Shirley hung out in Earls' back yard. They would go home to Porter on the weekend.
On December 31, 1948, at the stroke of midnight, Dickie married her childhood sweetheart and the love of her life, Fred Franklin George Sr, and they began a wonderful life together, following their dream of farming and ranching, working side by side. Dickie could work any of the machinery and was the official hayracker in the summertime. She loved the outdoors, but when inside she enjoyed following sports and politics and watched bull riding on television. She was an avid reader and was well read, and Nora Roberts was her favorite author.
Dickie departed this life Wednesday, January 10, 2018 in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the age of 86 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred George; her parents, Marvin and Lavonia Elkins; granddaughter, Lacey Durrett; grandson, Joseph George; an infant child, Judith Celia George and a sister, June Darnell.
Left to cherish her memory and find peace in her statement that she had a wonderful life and wouldn't change anything, are four children, Kathryn Durrett of Porter, Vicki Keele of Okmulgee, Carol Adams of Porter and Fred George Jr. and his wife, Beky of Omaha, Texas; her grandchildren and spouses, Rebecca Keele, Michelle and Derek Johns, Rachel and Bill Kaiser, Amy and Clinton Roberts, Sherry Adams, Daniel and Anna Leitz, MegAnne George, Abby George and Samuel George; nine great-grandchildren; five great great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Dale Darnell; a sister-in-law, Faye George Miller; extended family and friends.
Family and friends will gather for a Visitation Sunday afternoon from 2:00-4:00 pm at Mallett Funeral Home and Crematory in Wagoner.
The Funeral service will be at 2:00 pm Monday at the Chapel at Mallett Funeral Home. The Reverend Bobby Jenkins will officiate. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery in Porter, with grandsons and great-grandsons serving as pallbearers.
