Richard E.'s Story
Richard E. Phillips, 79, husband of Claire (DeScenza) Phillips, passed away suddenly on Sunday at Lahey Medical Center, Burlington surrounded by his family.
Richard was born in Lynn, son of the late Kenneth A. and Mary E. (Laubner) Phillips. He was raised in Lynn and was a graduate of Lynn English, Class of 1956. He continued his education at the University of Maine, going on to earn a Masters degree from Boston University. He proudly served in the US Navy from 1962 to 1964. Richard was employed as a teacher in the Lynnfield public schools for 18 years and more recently at the Solstice Therapeutic School in Rowley. Dick was also an entrepreneur, running a successful sign business in Ipswich. He will be remembered as a beautifully humble, kind and generous man, peaceful and spiritual with the heart of a servant. Dick loved his family, his faith, and his Cursillo men’s group. He also loved his home projects, both large and small.
In addition to his wife, Claire, he is survived by two sons, Gary Phillips and his wife, Elisabeth, and their children, Evangelina and Caleb, all of Newburyport; and Mathew Phillips of Danvers; two brothers, Robert Phillips of Maryland and John Phillips of Gloucester; two sisters, Shirley Magill of South Carolina and Katherine Radcliffe of Rhode Island; and many nephews and nieces. Dick was predeceased by his daughter, Jennifer, and a sister, Patricia Phillips, formerly of Gloucester.
His funeral will be held 9 a.m., Thursday, November 16, from the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home, Six High St., Ipswich, followed by the celebration of a funeral Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Hope Church, 1 Pineswamp Road, Ipswich. Family and friends are respectfully welcome. Visiting hours are tomorrow (Wednesday) 4 to 7 p.m. Interment will be in the Cowles Memorial Cemetery, Ipswich. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital, Boston MA 02114; or St. Vincent de Paul, at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, Ipswich.
