Rita's Story

Rita Vos, 86, of Oskaloosa died Monday, February 12, 2018, at the Oskaloosa Care Center in Oskaloosa. She was born July 2, 1931, in Macomb, Illinois, the eldest daughter of Ray and Laura Atherton Foxall. She was active in the high school yearbook staff during her high school years. She graduated from Macomb High School with the class of 1949. She went on to attend Kletzing College (which came to be Vennard College) in University Park. It was while taking an Old Testament class in college that she met the love of her life, Glen Vos. On December 24, 1950, she and Glen were married in Oskaloosa. Glen died November 11, 2017. Early on Rita worked at Krutz Dime Store and as a nanny for the Dr. Collison family. She then worked as a secretary at a law office in Oskaloosa. Last she went to work at William Penn College, she retired as the Registrar after 35 years of service. She took great pride in helping the students navigate the process of choosing classes and earning their degrees. In appreciation for her over 35 years of service the university awarded her an honorary degree. She was a member of Fellowship Bible Church in Oskaloosa. Rita had a great sense of adventure. She looked forward to family camping trips around the country and weekend getaways with Glen. She also found great joy in having her family and friends around. She looked forward to the holidays every year and preparing the feast for her immediate and extended family to enjoy. Rita also looked forward to the regular get togethers of she and Glens group of friends affectionately known as the gang. She had a very compassionate heart and enjoyed caring for those around her. She was always optimistic and always had a word of encouragement for her family and friends to pursue their passions.
Her family includes her three children, Carol (Merlin) Hite of New Sharon, Gene Vos of Oskaloosa, and Timothy (Peggy) Vos of Naperville, Illinois; four grandchildren, Jacqueline (Jason) Murphy, Dustin (Kate) Hite, Darin Hite, Jill (Cody) Schuring; five great grandchildren, Tyson and Keira Murphy, Abigail and Molly Hite, and Trenton Schuring; four sisters, Diana (Vincent) White of Macomb, Illinois, Sharon (Keith) Johannes of Plainfield, Wisconsin, Linda (Fred) Smith of Macomb, Illinois, and Judy (Roy) Johlfs of Macomb, Illinois; two brothers, Joseph (Beatrice) Wheeler of Plainfield, Wisconsin, and Ron Foxall of Macomb, Illinois; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, Stephen Vos; and a sister, Nancy Rittenhouse.
Funeral services will be held Friday, February 16, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. in the Fellowship Bible Church in Oskaloosa with Reverend Rodney DeRonde officiating. Burial will be in the University Park Cemetery in University Park. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will begin Thursday after 11 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 5-7 Thursday evening to greet friends and family. Memorials may be made to the Building fund at Fellowship Bible Church in Oskaloosa.
