Thomas's Story

Text size

Thomas A. Symes, 78, of Georgetown, passed away on November 8, 2017.
He leaves behind his wife of 54 years, Elizabeth (Wells) Symes, and his three children, Stephen Symes of Salisbury, Sharon Symes of Haverhill, and Stacey (Symes) Tardif and her husband, Shawn, of Methuen. Tom also leaves behind three grandchildren, Rory, Mathieu, and Camille Tardif, who prevented him from a proper retirement in Florida. He was predeceased by his two brothers, Bob Symes of Quincy and Ron Symes of Millington, Md.
After his honorable discharge from the U.S. Army, Tom worked in the jet engine division of General Electric for more years than necessary -- five more years to be exact -- since he insisted that they tried to cheat him out of six weeks of vacation pay the first time he was offered early retirement. He refused to retire out of principle, later admitting that wasn’t his brightest moment. Tom worked the night shift but could always be counted on to be up by noon to be around when his kids got home from school or to give the little old ladies in the neighborhood rides to hair appointments or the market.
If you knew him or any of his children, you knew of his legendary frugal ways—he always looked forward to the day after a holiday for the clearance prices on seasonal baked goods—but you also knew him to have a loving, generous heart. His infectious smile, sense of humor, and the mischievous twinkle in his eyes will be missed by all.
Per his wishes, there will be no services. In lieu of flowers, go to Market Basket and grab a free cup of coffee and check out the day-old rack in the bakery.
